Common Signs You’re Entering into Perimenopause

Many people are aware of the meaning of and symptoms associated with menopause. But did you know that the symptoms you usually think of are actually associated with a slightly different, more specific chapter of life? It’s called perimenopause.

Mind and Body Medicine, LLC, is all about solutions for psychiatric mental health. Tamara McDonald, DNP, wants everyone going through, and about to go through, perimenopause to be prepared for the journey as well as possible. This kind of preparation will make it much easier for you as you navigate this new phase.

Perimenopause 101

Perimenopause is the transitional part of your life before you begin menopause and lasts between 4 to 8 years. Menopause itself isn’t the time when you’re having fewer periods and experiencing symptoms like those we’ll discuss later. In fact, menopause is marked by the time in which you have gone without a period for a full 12 months in a row.

This distinction often confuses people, but it’s important to recognize perimenopause as the transitional time (that which can be difficult because of its many symptoms) and menopause as the time in which the transition is complete. The transition, of course, is moving into the post-reproductive years.

Now that we’ve got that cleared up, what are the signs you’re beginning to enter perimenopause?

Signs and symptoms of perimenopause — and how to manage them

Perimenopause has several signs and symptoms that can be uncomfortable, embarrassing, and difficult to discuss with others. But once you know why they’re happening, it can be easier to talk to others and even get help for this process. Common signs include

  • Hot flashes
  • Problems sleeping
  • Irregular, lighter, or heavier periods
  • Headaches or migraines
  • Confusion or mental fog
  • Heart palpitations
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Changes in mood

Perimenopause can be upsetting, especially due to some of these symptoms. And if you’re not aware of the cause, you can be wondering what’s wrong without reaching out for help. Many women are led to believe these symptoms are ‘normal’ and told they ‘just need to deal with them.’ This is far from the truth! There are many treatment options to help reduce your symptoms and help you age healthily!

Some treatments you can do at home by yourself, such as managing stress, eating a more balanced diet, and increasing your exercise routine. However, other treatments exist that can help immensely, such as bioidentical hormone therapy (BHT), non-hormonal prescription therapy, CBT (or cognitive behavioral therapy), taking herbal supplements, and joining a support group.

The important thing to realize is that there’s nothing wrong with you. These symptoms are common, but you don’t need to suffer through them in silence. Once you realize that you’re starting to experience perimenopause, getting in touch with a medical provider is a great first step. They can help you build a personalized treatment plan that suits your needs.
